Lets face it, for some people the thought of sitting down and meditating (for peace or any other reason) is like thinking about sitting in the dentist chair. Real uncomfortable. Some people’s minds and bodies are just too “mobile” to stay in one place very long. The good news is: you don’t have to be still of mind and body, to be in the “stillness” of inner peace and love.
In his second book, Beyond the Relaxation Response, Harvard researcher Herbert Benson, M.D., revealed what yogis, Tai Chi players, dancers and runners have known for years, you can move and meditate at the same time. Dr. Benson found that runners who said to themselves: “one” or paid attention to their steps, achieved similar benefits as sitting meditators. In the over twenty years since that book was written, there has been a lot of study into moving meditation and the “runner’s high”.
For the purposes of the Greater Cincinnati 30-day Experiment for Peace, any movement you want to do that brings you into peace should be linked to the field. Whether it’s a simple walk with your dog or some complex yogic posture, if its purpose is peace, then send it our way. But…. If its intention is violence, keep it clear. Martial arts practiced with peaceful non-violent intention, bent on personal perfection and transformation, are okay. But if you are breaking boards, visualizing breaking bones, or inflicting pain, then your energy is oppositional to unity and love. So please keep it to yourself.
If you don’t have a method then try Qigong (Chi Kung). Qigong is a Chinese medical/meditation system used to integrate, heal and transform the human condition. There is some rather sketchy research that demonstrates Qigong practitioners emit sound waves from their bodies that can heal others within the room. But there is also a wealth of good Qigong research for individual healing, healing others and influencing healing at great distances.
